Shaped Candle Care and Burn Guide
Caring for Your Shaped Candle
Our novelty shaped candles are designed to be burned and enjoyed — not just displayed. With a little care, you'll get a beautiful, safe burn every time.
Intended Use
These candles are crafted to be burned. Their unique shapes will naturally soften and transform as they burn, which is part of the experience. Always burn your candle on a heat-resistant, flat, stable surface to catch any wax as it melts.
The First Burn
The first burn is the most important. Allow your candle to burn long enough for the melt pool to reach the outer edges of the widest point — this helps prevent tunneling and ensures an even burn in future sessions. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Wick Trimming
Before every burn, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (6 mm). A properly trimmed wick produces a cleaner, steadier flame and reduces soot and mushrooming. Trim the wick after the candle has fully cooled.
Safe Placement
Always place your candle on a non-flammable, heat-resistant surface such as a ceramic plate, candle tray, or trivet. Keep it away from curtains, paper, fabrics, and other flammable materials. As shaped candles melt, they may spread — make sure the surface beneath is wide enough to contain any wax runoff.
Avoid Drafts
Keep your candle away from open windows, fans, air vents, and air conditioning. Drafts cause uneven burning, excess flickering, and can be a fire hazard. A steady, calm flame is a sign of a safe, healthy burn.
Burning Behavior of Shaped Candles
Shaped pillar candles are made from solid wax and will melt in their own unique way. As the candle burns, the shape will soften and change — this is completely normal and intentional. The wax may pool around the base of the flame; this is part of the design. Never try to reshape or adjust the candle while it is lit.
When to Stop Burning
Stop burning your candle when approximately ½ inch (1.5 cm) of wax remains at the base, or when the flame begins to flicker excessively, produce black smoke, or the wick moves out of position. Continuing to burn past this point can overheat the surface beneath and become a fire hazard.
Never burn a candle all the way down to nothing.
General Safety Reminders
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
- Allow the candle to cool completely before handling, moving, or re-trimming the wick.
- Extinguish with a candle snuffer or by gently blowing — never use water.
